After college graduation, Roker worked at independent station WTTG for two years as a weathercaster. In 1978, he began working for NBC when WKYC in Cleveland hired him. After five years working with WKYC, Roker got a promotion to work at WNBC-TV as the weekend weathercaster. After 8 months at WNBC-TV, he became a regular weeknight weathercaster for the station.

From 1983 to 1996, Roker was the regular substitute for forecaster Joe Witte on the NBC News program NBC News at Sunrise, and from 1990 to 1995, he filled in for Willard Scott, Bryant Gumbel. From 1997 through 2000’s Roker filled for Matt Lauer on the Today Show. In 1995, he became the host of The Al Roker Show, a weekend talk show on CNBC.
