Born Christopher James Harris, Chris Harris is a British automotive journalist, race driver, and television presenter. Harris has worked as a reviewer, writer, and editor for many automotive magazines, including EvoAutocar, and Jalopnik. He has presented numerous television and YouTube series through NBCSN and DRIVE. Harris has been one of the main presenters for BBC America’s Top Gear since 2017. He created the web series, “Chris Harris on Cars” on YouTube, which was moved to the Top Gear website and then later launched on BBC America.

Chris Harris Career

Harris started his career at Autocar. When he joined Autocar, he mostly did menial chores but after some time he was promoted to Autocar’s official road-test editor position.  He left Autocar in 2008 and co-founded Driver Republic, a digital platform that lasted only a year.

After the closure of Driver Republic, Harris joined Evo as a writer and reviwer. His essays were published every few months.

In early 2012, Harris began presenting a weekly opinion and review YouTube series in cooperation with DRIVE. This was formed on the DRIVE YouTube channel CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS. Every episode featured a car that Harris either owned or that the manufacturer donated to DRIVE. Harris left the network after two years, maintaining a nice relationship with DRIVE.

In  October 2014, he created  and successfully launched a YouTube Channel titled Chris Harris On Cars. He paired up with Neil Carey, a long-time colleague who specialized in camera work and still does freelance work for the show.

Moreover, Harris also started blogging for Jalopnik, an online car blog, on November 6, 2014.

In February 2016, Harris joined the  new cast of Top Gear, replacing Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May. He was a recurring presenter for Top Gear in 2016, but in 2017, he became one of the main presenters, following a promotion after Chris Evans’ resignation.

In  season 24 of Top Gear, Harris co-hosted with Matt LeBlanc and Rory Reid, but in the 27th season, he co-hosted with Freddie Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness.

Racing Career

Harris was a race driver. He won his first race in a Formula Palmer Audi in 2000. Some of the racing cars he has driven include a Porsche 911 Cup, Renault Sport R.S. 01, Aston Martin Vantage GT12, Van Diemen FF1600, Rover SD1 and a Jaguar E-Type. Harris has also raced in endurance races including the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 2010 and 2015.
