He was sent straight to the producers of the show after he received a silver ticket from ABC13,  an ABC affiliate following his local contest win. The 20th season of American Idol premiered on February 27, 2022, with Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan taking the judges’ seats.

Mills mentioned that even now he struggles to love himself but music has helped him overcome the obstacle of being bullied and feeling unconfident.
